Cola Review

Pierre Richardson's exciting revelations of cola, pop sugar water, fizzy drinks and soda.

Dublin Dr. Pepper

This is probably in the running for my favourite cola. This could be due to the fact that I can only get it in Texas, if I go to SXSW. Brewed just south west of Dallas in Texas, Dublin Dr. Pepper has been made the same way since the 1930s, still using most of the original machinery and holding true to the original recipe, including cane sugar. Light and sweet, fizzy and smooth, Dublin is the tops. It is also available in glass bottles for extra classic points. They are currently being sued for selling outside of their district, which is a real shame. Haters gonna hate I guess. Try and find some.

Henry Weinhard’s Black Cherry Cream Gourmet Soda
Ingredients: Carbonated Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Caramel Color, Red #40, Blue #1, Natural and Artifical Flavors, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid
I really thought I would enjoy this more than I did. I am usually a sucker for old-timey offerings from companies that have been around for ever. Boasting “Original Recipe” on the label, I was a little bummed out on the use of Corn Syrup instead of cane sugar or other sweetener. You can taste the kind of unnatural flavor and it throws the whole thing off. It wasn’t the worst soda I’ve had but it was far from the best.

Mexican Coca-Cola
Ingredients: carbonated water, sugar, phosphoric acid, natural flavor, caffeine
Ah, the magical delicious nectar. I had to start at the beginning. There is a reason Coca-Cola started out medicinally. My medicine.
Coming by this delicacy in Canada, let alone Ottawa, is such a rare treat I had to buy two. This is the OG. You can taste nothing but the cola coming out of the glass bottle. Sweet and smooth, with the carbonation not too strong. When we were down in Austin for SXSW, I would drink these and Dublin Dr. Pepper’s (review coming soon!) CONSTANTLY. The cane sugar makes me so sad that all cola isn’t made that way. Hopefully the spike in corn prices will drop the costs. Or at least more throwback offerings  a la Throwback Pepsi and 7-UP (thanks Donald Trump!)
